A Serious Case of the Book Fever

I have a fever.

And the only prescription is more book lovin’!

I love everything about books. The sci-fi, fantasy, young adult and bestseller fiction. Not to mention my secret affair with cheesy romance novels. I can’t help myself!

I just finished these three books and I’m already itching for some more.

I devoured The Hunger Games in two days, Fifty Shades took me about the same. City of Bones has been work in progress for me- not sure if I’m going to continue with the trilogy, though. It was just a little too juvenile for my taste.

Speaking of juvenile, this would be a perfect time to discuss Fifty Shades of Grey. This is the book everyone’s talking about. This is the steamy “mommy porn” novel has jumped to the top of the bestseller lists so I had to get a copy to see what it was about. After all… I’m not the type to turn down a steamy novel. *wink

I went into this story expecting to be blown away and I was, instead, completely floored that it was going viral. The writing style was juvenile, the characterization stripped almost exactly from the Twilight series, and the entire premise was overall ridiculous. Sure, the steamy scenes were hot. However, I found that the author took the kinkery a little too far for my taste. And the blatant product pushing and absurd amount of money the main character, Christian Grey, had was eye-rolling. And if I hear that girl talk through her “inner goddess” one more time my eyes might roll right out of my head. Needless to say, it was very disappointing.

That didn’t stop me from reading all three books, though.

*hangs head in shame*

If I have any sort of connection with a character then I simply must see that character through to the end. I just couldn’t put those books down until I knew more about Christian Grey, the troubled millionaire. I am almost embarrassed to admit it.

There is one thing I can tell you if you’re thinking of forking over the outrageous $9.99 for the first book, there are better books out there if you’re looking for something a little racy to read during your bubble bath. I’ll be doing a little research and let you in on my favorites soon…

One good thing did come out of my wasted two days… and that’s the renewed optimism that if one crazy lady writing Twilight fanfiction can get three book deals, instant fame and a multi-million dollar movie offer then I definitely still have a chance!

Next up on my list is The Night Circus. I can’t wait!

What are you reading that I should put on my list next?

I’m about half way through the third book of the twitchy palm series (shhh, don’t tell anyone! lol!) and I agree with you on all points. I swear Ana must be schizophrenic between her Inner Goddess and her subconscious. Oh my. *bites lip* And if I see the word “petulant” one more time, I’m going to stab myself in the eye! ;)

Have you read anything by Orson Scott Card? If not, it sounds like he’d be right up your alley. He is my favorite author of all time! I’d start with the Ender’s Game series, but pretty much any of his stuff is golden (except for his religious fiction. I’m not really down with that genre, lol).

Add “mercurial” to the over-used words list!

Let’s not for “infintesimally” and how his sweat pants would just hang “in that way.” Gag.

          *forget.

          I hate typos.

Holy cow. But yes, the “oh my” is driving me insane. I’m like you. It’s terrible and I won’t recommend it to anyone but I’m halfway through the second book because I need to know where they end up. For shame.

    • Laura Jane says:

I have been told several several times to pick up Ender’s Game. I think I’ll put it on my summer list for sure this time. Two more people in the last week- must be a sign from someone above! (That knows it MUST get better than Oh Fifty, my Fifty.)

      BLACKBERRY!

Laura, love your musings! I totally agree with 50 Shades of Grey…. For a fun read, I recommend the Aurora Teagarden series by Charlaine Harris *yes, of True Blood* Aurora is a librarian {tee hee} that gets pulled into solving murders and a little romance along the way

    • Laura Jane says:

I love Charlaine Harris! And, of course, you know my style. =) Teagarden series is on the LIST!

I’m a total book-a-holic! I recently read The Night Circus and adored it! I’m torn about 50 Shades. One on hand I want to see what the hype is all about (although I’ve heard a number of people give very similar reviews as yours), but on the other hand, I don’t agree with the whole “stealing characters” thing. Yeah, I know, supposedly they’re totally different!!! (Not.), but I don’t agree with it. If I do read it I’ll be getting it from the library so as not to spend money on it ;)

In addition to The Night Circus, I recently read and really enjoyed:

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield
Fall of Giants by Ken Follett
    11/22/63 by Stephen King
Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor
A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

    • Laura Jane says:

Yay! So glad you liked The Night Circus- I am so excited to read it. Going to pick it up this weekend!

That’s exactly why I gave in and read Fifty Shades, because I had to see what the hype was about. I was continually battering myself because I refused to stop reading it when it made me as crazy psycho as it did. I am still ashamed that I spent that money on those books. But, I will say it has given me some great coffee chat fodder. =)

The stealing characters was my biggest problem. I could see RIGHT through them. Right down to the minor characters. The peppy, fashion crazy little sister (Alice), the hunting and down to earth dad (Charlie) and the ethnically diverse “best friend” that is completely in love with the heroine (Jacob- or JOSE, in Fifty Shades). It was so silly…

Game of Thrones!! Love the tv series – a must read for me this summer!
Thank you for the other recommendations! I’ve heard of The Thirteenth Tale but the others I have not. Very excited!

  4. Stephanie says:

It’s addicting, huh?! I will have to check out a couple of these books! :)

    • Laura Jane says:

Check them out- don’t spend $30 on them! Waste of money, dear friend! However… they are set in Seattle… HaHa

  5. LOL that you kept reading 50 Shades of Grey! I’m going back and forth on whether or not I want to read it. Would it be worth the read if I borrowed the book? I’ve been trying to finish up City of Glass for six months. I just haven’t had a chance to sit down and read in awhile. I think I’ll bring it to work and read it while I pump. Thanks for the recommendations!

  6. Mommy B says:

I absolutely love your blog! I am reading the hunger games right now, too! And I share the same feelings you have on the weight loss process… frankly it is terrible. But i’m trying! Keep on! I want to read more!

  7. Dana says:

I just finished The Fever Series and it was better than The Hunger Games!
